Eventually, the heart-wrenching sobs turn into short fits of despair, followed by a deep, shuddering breath. Tears are wiped from my cheek.

Through blurry, swollen eyes, I see Cody’s thoughtful expression and I’m instantly pulled into the light.

“Hey, beautiful.”

I give a snot-filled snort. “Funny.” I realize where I am and start to get up. “I’m so sorry. I swore I was done crying.”

He holds on tight as he reaches for tissues from the box on my nightstand—my body moving with his. “No . . . it’s okay. I’m totally getting used to the angry-moody girl who likes to leave snot and mascara smudges all over my shirts.”

“Thanks,” I say, blowing my nose.

“Holee, that’s gross.”

I try getting up again, but he wrestles my head back to his chest then plants a kiss on top. “Stay. I kinda like this.”

I laugh at him, then sigh, snuggling in closer—his chest is solid and warm against my cheek. I don’t care if this is another one of his insincere flirtatious moments. I wouldn’t move if you paid me. “Sorry. I guess I kinda lost it.”

“Kinda?”

I lean back and glare at him. “You don’t need to rub it in.”

“Oh, stop.” He playfully shoves my head back against him. I wrap my arms around his waist and squeeze tight. “You probably needed it. It was bound to happen sometime. I’m surprised it took this long.”

He’s right. And I do feel a lot better—hollowed out—but better. “Yeah . . . well I’m sorry you had to be the one to see it . . . again.” I reluctantly crawl off his lap and grab another tissue. “Did I hear your mom come in?”

“Yes, but I told her I had it covered, so she left. Probably hung outside of the door for a while though, to make sure it was really okay.”

I gape at him. “Really? Oh my god! How embarrassing.”

“No, it’s cool. I’m sure she understands.”

“I doubt she would understand why I was on your lap.”

“She either didn’t see, or figured it was innocent, which it was,” he quickly clarifies. “If it wasn’t, she’d have ripped my head off for seducing you, then kick the crap out of me.”

How do the girls at school deal with this? The thoughtful flirtiness. I guess that’s why they’re always following him around like little hens, picking up the crumbs of affection he throws out.

I’ve become one of the hens.

Ugh!

He grabs me by the hand and pulls hard. I tumble onto the bed next to him.

“What was that for?” I say, laughing.

He leans over me, his eyes alight with humor. “I don’t know—just seemed to fit with the rest of the day, minus the volcano of emotion that just exploded.”

I guess that’s true.

His nearness is befuddling my brain. I watch as his gaze travels to my mouth. The humor disappears as his expression turns serious. My insides flutter and my heart pounds as his eyes drift up to mine searing me with an intensity I have no experience with. Suddenly, his lips are caressing mine.
